Description

Elizabeth’s sampler is very typical of Guernsey samplers of the time. An intricate flower
border, flower garlands and spot motifs which include a farmer with a gun and a
butterfly. Butterflies feature in samplers from both Guernsey and Jersey as the islands’
micros climate makes them the perfect breeding ground. Today the islanders are
encouraged every year to take part in a “butterfly watch” to identify and record the
species found.
She stitched her sampler on a cream linen, in silk using a a palette of 24 colours in silk.
Her sampler measures 19″ (w) x 20″ (h) and was stitched in silk on linen.
